Paola’s Youth Promoting Bikes

It’s amazing what school staff and kids can accomplish when they put their minds to it. Sunflower Elementary, grades 3-5, has been pushing hard to promote cycling and bike safety. The best way to make change is to get our youth involved in something. May is National Bike month, and here are short summaries of what they have accomplished.

-Alicia Cooks 4th grade class raised enough money to purchase 151 helmets for students that don’t have one. In addition, Heads Up donated 75 more, so they now have 226 helmets to hand out to students! MiCo Velo helped the cause by donating some of the proceeds from Tour de Vino.

– Principal Staci Wokutch and other staff helped us promote National Bike to School Day on Wednesday, May 8th. Weather wasn’t great as it was rainy, but they still had a decent turnout of students riding to school. MiCo Velo members Callie Benton and Scott Dreiling led a small group of kids through the rain to school. Over 25 bikes were counted on the racks outside the school. Before classes started, the entire school gathered in the gym and MiCo Velo President Scott Dreiling talked to kids about benefits of biking to school and bike safety. A Heads Up representative also talked about the importance of wearing helmets when riding.

-At the same assembly, it was announced that the school would host a ride on Wednesday, May 15th for any student that came to school with their bike and helmet. The ride will start at 1:30, so students will be able to get out of school to participate. New year, new updates!

Welcome to the new look MiCo Velo web site!  Feel free to look around and check out the new functionality and content.  We’ve got a couple new events in that section, with registration now open for the first ever Tour de Vino.  Of course,  before signing up for any events,  renew your membership today for reduced event entry.   You will find your membership page here to find out of your still current.   Same rates as 2011, single is $20 and family $30.   We’re still entertaining the idea of a members meeting and social as well.  Let us know what you think about the new look by contacting us today.

Holiday Happenings

Tis the busy season! Members can expect an email with much more info, but we wanted to touch base on a few important upcoming things.

Lost Trail CX – Dec 16th – 10am-3pm – Louisburg Cider mill
Preperation for this race is moving ahead. We have a great list of race prizes thanks to Boulevard race Team, Bike Source, Louisburg Cider Mill and Nighthawk Winery. Our challenging but fun course will be prepped this weekend. Planning to come out and watch? We’ll have a local vendor selling BBQ and sides, a fire pit and of course exciting racing. Want to race? Click on the image to get race times. Kids races are free for 10 and under. Never raced CX before? No problem, this will be a great time to start. Category 4 women at 11 am and men at 2:30 pm. Board Members Wanted
We are looking for 1 or 2 members that are willing to serve on the Board of Directors in 2013. The Board meets the first sunday of every month, with some sort of ride usually before the meeting. The next meeting is Sunday, Dec 2nd at 6:30 pm at the Knecht residence. Please contact us if you are interested.
