Members of the Lighthouse Presbyterian Church in Paola are having a family ride on the Flint Hills Nature Trail this Saturday, May 5th. If you’re wanting to ride, you can meet them at the church, at 9 am at 1402 E. 303 St, Paola, Ks. They have a trailer for those that can’t transport bikes. They will then drive to Rantoul, KS and ride on the Flint Hills Trail west to Ottawa, then ride back to Rantoul.

Those not familiar with the trail, it is a rails trail that generally follows the Marais Des Cygnes River to Ottawa from Osawatomie. The surface is crushed limestone.

May Board Meeting
This month’s meeting will be at El Tapatio in Paola, Thursday May 3rd at 7 pm. We will have a 20ish mile road ride before the meeting at 5:30. Meet in the El Tap parking lot. All members welcome to the ride and meeting!

John Brown Jamboree
We are looking to bring back a ride in conjunction with the annual John Brown Jamboree in Osawatomie. The event is the weekend of June 23rd. Please contact us if you’re interested in helping with planning or volunteering the day of. No experience necessary…

3rd Annual Roots Ride
We’re going to try something different this year for Roots…we’re going to plan ahead! This year, we’re looking for members to help plan the ride and any other events that we can incorporate around a really fun weekend. We’d like to take this ride to the next level and we need your great ideas. Please contact us if interested.

Bike Challenge
Last thing – I’m sure not many of you saw the ‘Challenge’ posted below. The challenge went something like this, ‘We’re a bike club that doesn’t yet act like a bike club. We need more member participation. We need weekly rides and people riding together.’

We can start by registering at the ‘Community’ forum, and posting when and where you are riding. You can also get more involved simply by clicking the little envelope icon on this page. You will be asked to submit your email address, then you will get emails with updated home page posts and notifications.

That’s it for now. Hope to see some new faces out riding and at our meetings.
Grab Your Bike and Ride!

Talk about a great year so far to ride a bike! I’m sure you’ve been enjoying the warm temperatures as much as I have. So, you check this site, and there are no rides! What the?

The Chain Gang has been doing some thinking (ok, actually just me). And it seems to me that we have ourselves a bike club here that really hasn’t figured out how to get the club part worked in. I know Miami Co isn’t a booming community of cyclists. But we should have enough members to get together a couple times a week, right? I also know this is usually a really busy time of year for folks. At least it is for me. But I think we, as the entire club, need to kick things in gear a little. We need members to step up and host or lead a ride. We need someone to volunteer or help with an event (we’ve got lots of ideas).

So, we’re – I’m – challenging all members, including myself. Get out and ride. But before you do, send us a note and let us know where. I’ll post it, send out an email, whatever it takes to try and get some people together. If there’s anyone that rides same day, same time, let’s start a ride. Doesn’t matter if it’s road, gravel, rail trail, or mountain bike trails. Taking the bike into the city, no problem, lets get a group going and carpool.

Give it a crazy name, or don’t name it at all. Same goes for me too. When I ride, I’ll get the word out. Just go to the ‘Community‘ section of this site and check…who knows, maybe we’ll start acting like a club.

Share your thoughts at contact@micovelo.com

The Members Meeting and Social will be held in Paola at the Town Square, formerly known as Evergreen Events. For those that don’t know, it is on the South side of the square downtown. We will serve hot chili and water and you are welcome to bring your own drinks. The meeting will start at 6:30 and should be over by 8. Families and non-members are welcome.

Wednesday, January 18th – 6:30 pm
Meeting place-Town Square, Paola
Please RSVP by going to contact us.

We will briefly talk about latest happenings and then will open floor to all. Let us know what you want from YOUR bike club. Your voice will be heard, but only if you’re there!

Here are a few of the benefits we hope to discuss:
- More Group Rides and Socials
-Involvement in existing Miami County Cycling Events
-Our own club sponsored bike events (many family oriented fun rides in the works)
-An ‘official’ club – Our non-profit status has started but is pending until we can afford it.
-Community Bike Advocacy – We all like to ride. Our communities need to know we will push to make things better. How about a few bike racks and designated bike lanes?
-Safer Travel to and from school for children who ride or walk.
-Cool MiCo Velo bike accessories (anyone seen our jerseys?)

We want to hear from you and what you want. Please consider becoming a member of MiCo Velo today.

Thanks

Come join us October 1st, at 9:00am starting in Osawatomie from John Brown Park. We’ll ride approx. 12 miles to Rantoul, and back, for a picnic lunch in the park. 7am start time for a longer, faster paced ride to Ottawa (22 Miles), and back with a rendezvous at the soft rock café around 10:30-11:00am. Families welcome, helmets required.

The Flint Hills Nature Trail is a nearly 120 mile rail-trail under development in northeast Kansas. It crosses 7 counties, and dozens of communities, along its east-west course. As the name implies, it crosses the beautiful Flint Hills. The Flint Hills represent one of the last remaining tallgrass prairie ecosystems in the world. Recognized as one of the longest rail-trails in the United States, it is home to abundant prairie plant and wildlife species, spectacular views, national historic sites, and a diverse set of recreational areas.

This resource had its roots in 1886 when several railroads started developing the line, including the Council Grove, Osage City & Ottawa Railway (which serviced coal mining) and the Missouri Pacific. The route fell out of service in the 1980s.

Rails-to-Trails Conservancy later acquired and railbanked the corridor in 1995 and then transferred it to KRTC to develop.
