This is your invitation to come see the sites, feel the autumn breezes, listen to wind in the trees as they sway, smell the fall fragrances and travel without the roadway clutter of cars. The Flint Hills Nature Trail is your pathway to a beautiful world which few people experience.
Come join us October 1st, at 9:00am starting in Osawatomie from John Brown Park. We’ll ride approx. 12 miles to Rantoul, and back, for a picnic lunch in the park. 7am start time for a longer, faster paced ride to Ottawa (22 Miles), and back with a rendezvous at the soft rock café around 10:30-11:00am. Families welcome, helmets required.
The Flint Hills Nature Trail is a nearly 120 mile rail-trail under development in northeast Kansas. It crosses 7 counties, and dozens of communities, along its east-west course. As the name implies, it crosses the beautiful Flint Hills. The Flint Hills represent one of the last remaining tallgrass prairie ecosystems in the world. Recognized as one of the longest rail-trails in the United States, it is home to abundant prairie plant and wildlife species, spectacular views, national historic sites, and a diverse set of recreational areas.
This resource had its roots in 1886 when several railroads started developing the line, including the Council Grove, Osage City & Ottawa Railway (which serviced coal mining) and the Missouri Pacific. The route fell out of service in the 1980s.
Rails-to-Trails Conservancy later acquired and railbanked the corridor in 1995 and then transferred it to KRTC to develop.

The ride that started it all is only a couple weeks away! That’s right, Rock and Roll to Roots is back for 2011. We’ll have a shorter 10ish mile course, and a longer 20+ mile course. Ride your own pace, finish and grab a bite to eat, then kick back at the annual Paola Roots Festival. More details and a sign-up are posted on the events page. Register Here
Membership Renewal – well, it’s taken us a little while to get everything in order, but the site is finally ready for everyone to renew. Look for details via email, and you’ll have a couple months to renew your membership. Individuals are $20 and a family membership is $30. After you renew, get involved…and grab your bike and ride!

What a busy day! We had a few MiCo Velo members ride, and even more helped man the last SAG station on sunday. Thanks to those that spent a few hours or more filling water jugs, making pb&j’s, cutting up fruit and everything else. We had a lot of nice comments from the riders. A special thanks to Mr McCaskill for all the work he put into the event.
Next on the calendar will be the Rock and Roll to Roots ride. Come and join us on our Hump Day rides on wednesdays starting at the high school parking lot.

Ok folks, sorry about the couple month delay. The chain gang also double as baseball coaches and parents, and this summer was crazy! but, we are back and we have been riding. Here’s a couple things to get on the calendar:
Cider Mill Century – this ride is put on by the club to the north, Johnson County Bike Club. There are ride distances of 25, 50, 70 and 100. Go to http://www.jcbikeclub.org/ for more info.
Help SAG at the Century – MiCo Velo members will be manning the shelter house on the west side of Miola Lake, north of the campground, all day during the Cider Mill Century. Come on out and help hand out water to the riders.
Rock and Roll to Roots 2011 – This is where we started! Details haven’t been hammered out yet, but look for updates soon and plan on riding before the music starts.
thanks

Sunday, May 1st – Members meeting and ride
We’ll meet at Wallace Park in Paola at around 2:30, ride leaves at 3 pm sharp. Meet at the lot by the shelterhouse on top of the hill. If it’s taken, we’ll meet at the pool parking lot. We will ride out and around Miola lake at an easy no-drop pace. Back to Wallace for meeting. Should be out of there by 5:30. Bring family if you want, but make sure you ride with your children. If anyone would like to organize food and/or drinks, feel free.
Sunday, May 1st is also the last day to be a MiCo Velo member for free (we think). Now, there are absolutely no penalties for renewing at the middle or end of May. Actually, the Web site changes to our registration process are taking longer than expected, so right now you can’t renew. The chain gang has way too many things going on this time of year. The site should be ready sometime the week of May 2nd. Please stay patient, we will have everything running smoothly soon. We’ll also let everyone know when ready. Just think of it as bonus free membership time…
Any other questions, bring them to the meeting.
Thanks
